Rubber cables

Rubber cable is a broad family of flexible power, control and special-duty cables that use elastomeric insulation, an elastomeric sheath, or both. It is selected where ordinary fixed-installation cable would not tolerate the combination of handling, bending, abrasion, moisture, oils, weather or mobile equipment duty. The term does not identify one voltage, construction or standard. A 450/750 V portable equipment cable, a 2 kV mining cable and a screened medium-voltage tunnelling cable may all belong to this category, but they are not interchangeable.

Typical applications include construction equipment, portable tools, pumps, generators, cranes, conveyors, excavators, mining machines, tunnel boring equipment, temporary power distribution and machinery exposed to wet or outdoor conditions. The operating mechanism matters as much as the electrical load. A cable that is occasionally moved by hand has a different duty from one that is continuously reeled, pulled behind a machine, carried in a festoon system or submerged with a pump. Selection should therefore begin with the equipment, route and movement rather than with jacket material alone.

Representative entries include H07RN-F, Type W, Type SHD-GC, NGFLGOU and screened mining or TBM cables, alongside dedicated pump and converter-fed motor constructions. This breadth is useful for initial comparison, but a rubber cable request still needs to be narrowed to the equipment, exact designation and movement duty before quotation.

Start electrical selection with system voltage, phase arrangement, conductor size, current, voltage drop and grounding method. Then identify whether control, pilot, ground-check or monitoring conductors are required. Medium-voltage designs may use conductor and insulation screens for electrical field control, while VFD motor circuits need a construction intended for converter output and an installation-specific screen and grounding plan. Specify the screen, pilot core or protective-earth arrangement from the selected construction; a heavy rubber sheath alone does not identify these features.

Mechanical duty determines conductor stranding, core lay-up, reinforcement and sheath design. Fine-stranded conductors support flexibility, but continuous movement still calls for a construction with a stated movement rating. For a moving installation, specify the minimum dynamic bend radius, travel distance, cycle frequency, cable speed, pulling load, torsion, acceleration and whether the cable runs over sheaves or onto a drum. Reeling, trailing, festoon and cable-chain operation place different stresses, so use the movement rating and limits for the selected model rather than the word "rubber."

Rubber insulation across these products commonly includes EPR or related cross-linked elastomeric compounds. Outer protection varies across heavy-duty rubber, chloroprene-type compounds, CPE-type mining jackets, TPU on selected severe-service products and halogen-free materials on specific designs. Material names are useful, but the required performance should be stated directly: abrasion, cut and tear exposure, oil or grease contact, sunlight, ozone, water, mud, low temperature, flame behaviour or low-smoke requirements. The term "rubber cable" is not a substitute for those model-specific ratings.

Water exposure needs particular care. Outdoor use, intermittent wetting and continuous submersion are different conditions. H07RN8-F is intended for AD8 submersion in fresh or industrial water up to the limits stated for that construction, while the submersible-pump cable is intended for pumps, wells and equipment below the waterline. Other rubber cables in the range may suit damp or outdoor service without being intended for permanent immersion. State water type, depth, temperature, pressure, installation length and termination conditions when selecting a pump or submerged cable.

Standards and approvals should be treated at product level. The range brings together products associated with EN 50525-2-21, DIN VDE cable families, ICEA/NEMA mining constructions, SANS cable types and AS/NZS mining cable systems. Selected constructions also reference UL or MSHA approval categories; the quotation should state the required listing or approval for the exact construction, size, marking and supporting document. A family name or similar physical construction does not give every option the same approval scope.

For an RFQ, provide the cable designation if known; otherwise provide equipment type, system voltage, full-load current or conductor size, number of power and auxiliary cores, grounding and screening arrangement, installed and moving length, movement type, drum or sheave dimensions, bend radius, tensile and torsional duty, ambient and conductor temperature, water/oil/weather exposure, required standard or approval, destination market, total quantity and drum lengths. Drawings, existing cable markings and a failed cable sample can help resolve an unfamiliar construction.
