Construction

Layer by layer

Three Class 5 tinned copper power conductors with triple-extruded semi-conducting conductor screen, Type RD 3 EPR insulation and strippable semi-conducting core screen are individually braided with 80 % fill tinned copper wires, laid up in right-hand lay (12 × PCD) around a semi-conductive rubber centre with three unscreened pilot cores in the outer interstices, and protected by twin Type RS 6 polychloroprene sheaths with an open 16-string nylon braid.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does SANS Type 61B use triple-extruded EPR insulation at 0.64/1.1 kV?
Triple extrusion bonds an inner semi-conducting conductor screen, Type RD 3 EPR insulation and a strippable outer semi-conducting core screen in a single pass. Combined with the semi-conductive rubber centre and 80 % fill tinned copper braid screens, this provides uniform earth-leakage detection and eliminates partial voids under severe mechanical flexing.
Why are there three pilot cores in Type 61B instead of one?
Placing one unscreened pilot core (6 mm² or 16 mm²) in each of the three outer interstices creates a geometrically symmetrical cable cross-section and provides extra pilot/control circuits for earth-continuity monitoring, remote stop/start and interlock telemetry.
Is SANS Type 61B suitable for continuous drum reeling?
No. Type 61B is designed for non-reeling movable electrical apparatus and trailing service. For reeling duty at 640/1,100 V, specify SANS Type 61A (with composite nylon/copper screen and TPU outer sheath) or SANS Type 41.
What are the SANS 1411-3 compound designations RD 3 and RS 6?
Under South African standard SANS 1411-3, Type RD 3 is a 90 °C high-grade ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) insulation compound, and Type RS 6 is a heavy-duty, flame-retardant, oil- and tear-resistant polychloroprene (CR) sheathing compound.
