FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between BS 6708 Type 70 and Type 71?
Both are 4 mm² (56/0.30 mm) unscreened pliable wire-armoured auxiliary and coalface lighting cables with 1.0 mm EPR insulation, a 2.0 mm rubber inner sheath, 7/0.45 mm galvanized steel armour and a 2.5 mm PCP outer sheath. Type 70 has 4 cores (4×4 mm², 23.5–26.0 mm OD, 1,100 kg/km) whereas Type 71 has 5 cores (5×4 mm², 24.9–27.4 mm OD, 1,230 kg/km).
How do BS 6708 Types 70/71 differ from Types 62/63/64?
Types 70 and 71 have unscreened EPR-insulated cores (1.0 mm wall, 1.5 kV test voltage) and rely on the 7/0.45 mm galvanized steel pliable wire armour as the metallic screen. Types 62, 63 and 64 have thicker EPR insulation (2.5 kV test voltage) plus individual composite tinned-copper/nylon braided screens over every core beneath the inner sheath and armour.
Why does the datasheet state 320/550 V while some catalogues list 640/1,100 V?
Under earlier BS 6708 coalface lighting standards and the published datasheet, Types 70 and 71 are rated at 320/550 V with a 1.5 kV AC factory test voltage; BS 6708:1998 consolidated small-core armoured lighting/control types under the 640/1,100 V umbrella.
What are the bending radius and pulling tension limits for Types 70 and 71?
Type 70 (4×4 mm²) has a minimum bending radius of 234 mm (9 × Max OD) and 96 kgf maximum pulling tension; Type 71 (5×4 mm²) has a minimum bending radius of 247 mm and 100 kgf maximum pulling tension.
