Construction

Layer by layer

Three IEC 60228 Class 5 tinned copper phase conductors insulated with EPR, wrapped with coloured textile identification tape and individually screened with a tinned-copper/nylon composite braid are laid up in direct contact around a central bare tinned copper earth conductor together with the pilot element: 1 unscreened EPR pilot core (Type 307), 1 copper/nylon braided-screened EPR pilot/fourth core (Type 307M) or a 3-core unscreened pilot sub-unit in its own elastomeric sheath (Type 307S), enclosed by rubber bedding and a heavy-duty chloroprene outer sheath.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do BS 6708 Type 307, Type 307M and Type 307S differ in construction?
All three are 1,900/3,300 V unarmoured flexible mining power supply cables with three copper/nylon braided-screened EPR phase cores laid in contact around a bare central tinned copper earth conductor. Type 307 includes one unscreened pilot core (16–95 mm²); Type 307M adds an individual copper/nylon braided screen over the fourth/pilot core (25–120 mm²); and Type 307S replaces the single pilot core with a 3-core unscreened pilot unit (3×4, 3×6 or 3×10 mm² enclosed in a 17.8–23.6 mm sub-sheath).
Why is the central earth conductor uninsulated in Type 307, 307M and 307S cables?
Laying the three (or four in Type 307M) composite tinned-copper/nylon core screens in continuous metallic contact with the bare central tinned copper earth conductor creates a low-resistance parallel earth-fault path (0.14–0.50 Ω/km) along the entire cable length, ensuring immediate gate-end tripping on any phase-to-screen fault or external penetration.
What is the difference between continuous and intermittent current ratings in the schedule?
Continuous current ratings (110–320 A) apply to steady full-load duty at 25 °C ambient. Intermittent current ratings (130–385 A) apply to cyclic coalcutter and shearer face passes where periodic off-load intervals allow thermal dissipation.
When should BS 6708 Type 321 / 331 be chosen instead of Type 307?
Type 307/307M/307S is an unarmoured flexible trailing cable for mobile coalcutters and face machines. For semi-fixed mine roadway extensions or quarry trailing routes requiring metallic crush protection, select pliable galvanised steel wire armoured BS 6708 Type 321 (unscreened) or Type 331 (screened).
