FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What does the designation (N)3GHSSYCY mean under DIN VDE 0250-605?
(N) denotes alignment with DIN VDE 0250-605; 3G is the 3GI3 cross-linked EPR phase insulation; H is the inner/outer semiconductive rubber field-control system; the first S is the individual concentric copper wire screen (/3E) over each phase core; the second S is the overall concentric copper monitoring screen (ÜL) over the first inner sheath; the first Y is the PVC inner/intermediate sheath; C is the galvanized steel wire braid armour; and the final Y is the red flame-retardant PVC (DMV6 / YM5) outer sheath.
Why is the minimum flexible ambient temperature +5 °C for (N)3GHSSYCY?
Unlike rubber-sheathed trailing cables (such as NTSCGEWÖU or (N)TSCGECEWÖU, which remain flexible down to -25 °C or -35 °C), (N)3GHSSYCY uses thermoplastic PVC (DMV6 / YM5) for its inner, intermediate and outer sheaths. Below +5 °C, plasticized PVC stiffens and can crack under bending stress; once installed in a fixed position, however, the cable operates safely down to -40 °C.
How do the two concentric copper screens (/3E and ÜL) work together with the steel wire braid armour?
Each of the three EPR-insulated MV phase cores has its own concentric copper screen (/3E) to control the radial electric field and conduct phase-to-earth fault currents. Over the laid-up cores and first inner sheath sits the overall concentric copper monitoring conductor (ÜL), which is isolated from the outer galvanized steel wire braid armour (C) by a second PVC intermediate sheath. In underground mining and tunnelling, this double-screen + steel-braid arrangement ensures that any rockfall or mechanical penetration contacts the outer armour and ÜL monitoring screen before reaching a live MV phase.
When should I specify (N)3GHSSHCH instead of (N)3GHSSYCY?
Specify (N)3GHSSHCH when the tunnel, metro cavern or underground mine ventilation plan mandates low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) cabling to IEC 60754-1/2 and IEC 61034. (N)3GHSSYCY provides identical electrical and mechanical armour performance at a lower cost where PVC sheathing (IEC 60332-1-2 flame retardancy) is permitted.
