Application fit

Is BS 6708 Type FS4 Flat Cable (640/1,100 V) right for your machine?

Purpose-built for 640/1,100 V overhead monorail catenary loops, longwall face cable-handling carriers and suspended auxiliary power/pilot feeds where tight minor-axis bending (100–120 mm), zero torsional twist and electrical isolation between individual core screens are required.

Festoon & line chain

Suitable

Flat parallel 4-core profile bends easily over monorail catenary trolleys (100–120 mm radius) without twisting.

Trailing & towing

Suitable

Used on articulated coalface catenary carriers and suspended machine loops.

Cylindrical / multi-layer drum

With conditions

Flat profile is designed for catenary loops or single-layer flat reels, not cylindrical spiral drum reeling.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

3.8 mm heavy-duty chloroprene outer sheath resists mine water, hydraulic oil, coal dust and flame.

Free-hanging vertical run

Not suitable

Flexible unarmoured trailing construction — do not suspend in deep vertical mine shafts without support.

Construction

Layer by layer

Three phase cores and one pilot core (2.5 mm² or 4 mm² IEC 60228 Class 5 tinned copper) are each insulated with 1.0 mm EPR, wrapped with coloured identification textile tape, individually screened with a tinned copper wire braid, and moulded parallel in a flat formation inside a 3.8 mm heavy-duty chloroprene (PCP) outer sheath with elastomeric webs preventing inter-core screen contact.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why are the 4 screened cores in BS 6708 Type FS4 spaced without contacting each other?
In BS 6708 Type FS4, the three phase cores and one pilot core are laid parallel in a flat plane separated by elastomeric ribs of the 3.8 mm chloroprene outer sheath so that each tinned copper braid screen remains electrically isolated from adjacent core screens.
What applications use BS 6708 Type FS4 flat cable?
Type FS4 is used on underground coal-mine monorail catenary festoon carriers, suspended loop systems along longwall stage loaders, and 640/1,100 V auxiliary power + pilot circuits (up to 28 A on 4×2.5 mm² and 37 A on 4×4 mm²) requiring tight 100–120 mm minor-axis bending.
Why is the 4×2.5 mm² flat width 29.8–31.8 mm instead of the 18.1–20.1 mm printed in the PDF?
Four parallel cores with 2.10 mm conductors, 1.0 mm radial EPR insulation (4.10 mm insulated OD) and individual tinned copper braid screens (~4.8 mm per core) plus two 3.8 mm outer sheath walls already require 26.8 mm before accounting for the three elastomeric separation webs between the non-contacting cores. Compared with 4×4 mm² (32.2–34.1 mm wide, where four 2.70 mm conductors add 4 × 0.60 = 2.4 mm), the physical width of 4×2.5 mm² is 29.8–31.8 mm.
How is screen resistance specified on BS 6708 Type FS4?
Because the four tinned copper braid screens do not contact each other, DC resistance at 20 °C is specified per individual screen: maximum 7.40 Ω/km on 4×2.5 mm² and 8.48 Ω/km on 4×4 mm².
