TBM gantry & advancing tunnel reel

Suitable

Primary duty — multi-layer pay-out and take-up on advancing TBM backup gantry reels in wet tunnels.

Cylindrical / multi-layer drum

Suitable

High-tension cylindrical drum winding with integrated aramid core and anti-torsion braid.

Mine roadway & tunnel wall hangers

Suitable

Hung onto segmental tunnel wall brackets behind the TBM as the bore advances.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

Tear-resistant polychloroprene outer sheath withstands bentonite slurry, groundwater and foaming agents.

Festoon & line chain

Not suitable

Large-OD anti-torsion MV TBM cable is not meant for tight C-rail festoon trolleys.

Construction

Layer by layer

Three Class 5 tinned copper phase conductors insulated with EPR between inner and outer semiconductive rubber layers and individually screened with a concentric copper/textile mixed braid (3E) are laid up with three interstitial control cores (or paired screened control cores on the 3.6/6 kV coal-cutter series), enclosed by a vulcanized Type GM1b inner sheath, an overall concentric copper wire monitoring screen (6ÜLKON), and a heavy-duty Type 5GM5 outer sheath.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why are 12/20 kV, 14/25 kV and 18/30 kV ratings used on tunnel boring machines?
On long hard-rock, EPB and subsea TBM drives (5 to 15+ km), stepping the backup gantry supply up to 12/20 kV, 14/25 kV or 18/30 kV reduces phase current for a given cutterhead MVA rating. That allows a smaller copper cross-section (e.g., 50–120 mm²), lower cable mass and a manageable reeling drum diameter inside the tunnel cross-section.
What is the difference between the 15 N/mm² and 30 N/mm² tensile ratings stated on the datasheet?
15 N/mm² applies to dynamic motorized drum reeling with frequent coiling and uncoiling cycles. Up to 30 N/mm² is permissible when the cable is towed slowly behind an advancing TBM backup gantry using properly distributed cable grips and rollers.
How does the 6ÜLKON concentric monitoring screen protect the TBM cable?
The 6 mm² copper wire spinning (6ÜLKON) sits directly over the vulcanized GM1b inner sheath beneath the red 5GM5 outer sheath. Any radial rockfall impact or pinch that penetrates the outer jacket contacts the 6ÜLKON screen first, tripping the ground-fault/pilot relay before a phase core is damaged.
How does the 1.8/3 & 3.6/6 kV coal-cutter series differ from the TBM reeling series?
The coal-cutter series (NTSCGECWÖU) is tailored for underground longwall shearer cable chains (Bretby handlers) with a high-visibility yellow 5GM5 outer sheath and, on 3.6/6 kV sizes, full-rated split phase earth screens (35/3 to 95/3) plus two screened control pairs 2×(2×0.75ST) + 2×0.75ÜL.
