Construction

Layer by layer

Three Class 5 tinned copper phase conductors insulated with Type 3GI3 EPR between semiconductive tape/rubber layers and individually screened with concentric copper wires (25/3E to 70/3E) are laid up around a semiconductive central filler on a polyester support together with three individually copper-screened 2.5 mm² control cores (EC), enclosed by an inner sheath, an overall concentric copper wire monitoring screen (ÜL), and either a red Type 5GM5 rubber outer sheath or a black halogen-free PUR outer sheath.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What does the double 'EC' in (N)TSCGECECWÖU signify compared with (N)TSCGECWÖU?
In DIN VDE 0250-813 nomenclature, the first 'CE' denotes individual concentric copper screens over each 3GI3 EPR phase core, while the second 'EC' denotes individual copper wire screens over the three 2.5 mm² control cores (3×2.5ST) to protect TBM pilot and telemetry circuits from medium-voltage switching interference. Both cables include an overall copper monitoring screen (ÜL) between the inner and outer sheaths.
When should the black ZH PUR version be selected instead of the red 5GM5 rubber version?
Select the black halogen-free PUR (ZH) version (IEC/EN 60754-1/2) for urban metro tunnels requiring zero-halogen outer sheathing or where fixed portal temperatures drop to −50 °C. Select the red Type 5GM5 elastomer version when 150 mm² phase cross-sections or classic vulcanized rubber handling are required.
How do multi-layer TBM reeling drums affect the current carrying capacity?
Because inner cable layers on a cylindrical TBM drum cannot dissipate heat by free convection, DIN VDE 0298-4 / TEBAOFLEX drum derating factors apply: relative to the 1-layer drum rating at 30 °C, 2 layers carry ~76%, 3 layers ~61%, 4 layers ~52%, 5 layers ~48%, and 6–7 layers ~33–38%.
How is the maximum permissible pulling tension calculated?
Dynamic reeling tensile load is 15 N/mm² applied strictly to the three phase copper cross-sections (e.g., 3 × 50 mm² × 15 N/mm² = 2,250 N; 3 × 150 mm² × 15 N/mm² = 6,750 N). Earth screens, control cores and the ÜL monitoring screen do not carry rated axial tension.
