Application fit

Is SANS Type 611 / 611-ECC (6.35/11 kV) right for your machine?

Designed for 6.35/11 kV open-cast and underground mining machinery—including walking draglines, electric rope shovels, rotary blast-hole drills, mobile stacker-reclaimers and hazardous-area section feeders—requiring SANS 1520-2 screened power cores and selectable 3-pilot (Type 611) or high-earth-fault ECC (Type 611-ECC) protection.

Trailing & towing

Suitable

Primary 6.35/11 kV trailing and section-feeder cable for open-cast shovels, medium-sized draglines, drills and movable substations.

Motorised monospiral reel

Suitable

Rated for motorized cable-reel operation on mobile mining machines when drum barrel diameter respects 9 × OD.

Cylindrical / multi-layer drum

Suitable

16-string open nylon reinforcement braid vulcanized between inner and outer CR sheaths resists reeling torsion and pull (1.1 to 10.8 kN).

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

UV-, sunlight- and oil-resistant twin polychloroprene (CR) sheaths withstand flooded pit benches and harsh solar exposure.

Free-hanging vertical run

Not suitable

Flexible unarmoured trailing construction — do not suspend in deep vertical mine shafts without support.

Construction

Layer by layer

Three Class 5 tinned copper power conductors insulated with 6.35/11 kV EPR (with strippable semi-conducting core screen) are individually screened with a tinned-copper/nylon braid and laid up with three EPM-insulated pilot cores in Type 611 (or two EPM pilots plus one bare tinned copper earth-continuity conductor in Type 611-ECC), bedded in an inner CR sheath, reinforced by a 16-string open nylon braid and oversheathed in black CR rubber.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

When should I specify Type 611-ECC instead of standard Type 611?
Specify Type 611 (3 insulated EPM pilot cores) on restricted-earth-fault systems where the three individual copper/nylon phase screens (1.6 to 4.1 kA for 1 s) exceed the maximum prospective earth-fault current. Specify Type 611-ECC (which replaces one pilot core with a 16 to 120 mm² tinned copper earth-continuity conductor) when substation fault levels require 3.6 to 17.0 kA (1 s) earth-fault capacity or lower earth-loop impedance.
Does Type 611-ECC have the same overall diameter as standard Type 611?
Yes. Because the bare tinned copper ECC conductor occupies the same interstice as the third EPM-insulated pilot core, Type 611 and Type 611-ECC share identical nominal overall diameters (50.7 to 85.6 mm) and fit the same couplers and cable glands.
Is SANS Type 611 / 611-ECC suitable for open-cast dragline and shovel reeling?
Yes. Its Class 5 tinned copper conductors, composite nylon/tinned-copper core screens, 16-string open nylon anti-torsion braid and UV/oil-resistant twin CR sheaths are engineered for open-cast reeling, trailing and section-feeder service at a 9 × OD minimum bend radius.
Where does Type 611 (6.35/11 kV) sit within the SANS 1520-2 medium-voltage family?
SANS 1520-2 covers five medium-voltage mining grades: Type 63 (1.9/3.3 kV), Type 66 / 66-ECC (3.8/6.6 kV), Type 611 / 611-ECC (6.35/11 kV), Type 622 / 622-ECC (12.7/22 kV) and Type 633 / 633-ECC (19/33 kV).
