Construction

Layer by layer

Five equal 6 mm² (84/0.30 mm) Class 5 tinned copper conductors insulated with 1.00 mm EPR and wrapped with coloured textile identification tape are laid up in contact around a central elastomeric cradle. The three phase cores carry individual composite tinned-copper/nylon braided screens (11 mm² total screen CSA; ≤ 11 Ω/km in parallel), while the earth and pilot cores are unscreened, bedded in rubber and enclosed in a 3.0 mm heavy-duty black chloroprene (PCP) outer sheath.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does BS 6708 Type 44 differ from BS 6708 Type 43?
Type 44 applies individual composite tinned-copper/nylon braided screens (11 mm² total screen CSA, ≤ 11 Ω/km in parallel) over the three 6 mm² phase cores and lays all five cores in contact around an elastomeric cradle under a 3.0 mm PCP outer sheath. Type 43 has no metallic braids and instead uses a semiconducting cradle and a 1.5 mm conducting elastomeric inner sheath.
Why does Type 44 have a higher copper weight (400 kg/km) than Type 43 (150 kg/km)?
Both cables contain five 6 mm² tinned copper conductors, but Type 44 adds three tinned-copper/nylon composite phase screens (totalling 11 mm² of braided screen wire), raising the copper content to 400 kg/km and total cable weight to 1,150 kg/km.
What are the short-circuit and pulling tension limits for BS 6708 Type 44?
Per the published datasheet, BS 6708 Type 44 5×6 mm² is rated for 46 A continuous current at 25 °C, a 908 A 1-second short-circuit current, a 241 mm (9 × OD) minimum bending radius, and a 218 kgf maximum pulling tension.
Why is the rated voltage 72/125 V (125/72 V)?
Handheld coal and stone drills under BS 6708 are supplied from 125 V phase-to-phase (72 V phase-to-earth) drill transformer gate-end boxes, with a 1.5 kV AC factory test voltage on all cores.
