FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What does the VDE type designation 3GSEYQY stand for?
'3G' denotes heat- and ozone-resistant 3GI3 ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) core insulation; 'SE' denotes individual semi-conductive and metallic copper screens over each phase core; 'Y' denotes the extruded PVC inner bedding; 'Q' denotes the galvanized steel wire braid armour (≥ 90 % coverage); and the final 'Y' denotes the flame-retardant red outer sheath.
How does 3GSEYQY (18/30 kV) differ from 2XSEYQY (6/10 kV)?
3GSEYQY uses flexible 3GI3 EPR rubber core insulation rated for 18/30 kV (Um = 36 kV, 48 kV AC test), whereas 2XSEYQY uses cross-linked polyethylene (2X / XLPE) core insulation rated for 6/10 kV (Um = 12 kV, 17 kV AC test). Both share the same SE + Y + Q + Y individually copper-screened and steel-wire-braid armoured tunnel construction.
Can 3GSEYQY be used on motorized TBM cable reels?
No. 3GSEYQY uses Class 2 stranded copper conductors and a galvanized steel wire braid armour designed for fixed tunnel wall brackets, shaft installation and semi-mobile substation relocation. For motorized TBM or excavator reeling drums at 18/30 kV, specify Class 5 rubber reeling cable NTSCGEWÖU.
Why does 3GSEYQY have both copper tape core screens and a steel wire braid?
The 16 mm² copper tape screen over each core confines the 18/30 kV radial electric field and provides a low-impedance earth-fault return path, while the outer ≥ 90 % galvanized steel wire braid ('Q') protects the cable against rockfall, crushing, blast debris and tensile pulling loads during tunnel advancement.
