Construction

Layer by layer

Three EPR-insulated Class 5 tinned copper phase cores (each with a coloured textile identification tape and composite tinned copper/nylon braid screen) and one pilot position (unscreened single pilot in Type 7, screened full-size pilot in Type 7M, or unscreened 3-core pilot unit in Type 7S) are laid up in direct contact around a central bare stranded tinned copper earth conductor, bedded in rubber and sheathed in heavy-duty chloroprene (PCP).

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do BS 6708 Type 7, Type 7M and Type 7S differ from one another?
All three are 640/1,100 V four-position trailing cables laid up around a central bare tinned copper earth conductor, with composite tinned-copper/nylon braid screens on the three phase cores. Type 7 has one unscreened single pilot core (16 to 95 mm²). Type 7M has a full-size fourth/pilot core (16 to 150 mm²) that is also individually screened with a copper/nylon braid. Type 7S replaces the single pilot core with an unscreened 3-core pilot unit (3×4, 3×6 or 3×10 mm²) for multi-channel control and interlock circuits.
How does the central bare earth conductor work with the phase screens?
Unlike elastomeric-cradle cables (such as BS 6708 Types 11, 14 and 16), Types 7, 7M and 7S place an uninsulated stranded tinned copper earth conductor (16 to 70 mm²) in the geometric centre of the cable. The composite copper/nylon braided phase screens lie in continuous longitudinal contact with this central bare earth conductor, providing a low-impedance earth-fault return path (0.158 to 0.660 Ω/km combined screen+earth resistance).
What are the continuous and intermittent current ratings based on?
Per BS 6708 and the published datasheets, continuous current ratings (85 to 320 A) and cyclic intermittent coalcutter ratings (96 to 385 A) are stated at a 25 °C ambient reference temperature. Apply appropriate derating factors where mine roadway ambient temperatures exceed 25 °C or where cable is coiled.
What is the minimum dynamic bending radius for BS 6708 Type 7, 7M and 7S cables?
Across all conductor cross-sections from 16 mm² to 150 mm², the minimum bending radius for mobile trailing service is 8 × maximum overall cable diameter (ranging from 309 mm on 3×16+16+16E up to 630 mm on 3×150+3×10+70E).
