Construction

Layer by layer

Three EPR-insulated Class 5 tinned copper phase cores—each wrapped with a coloured textile identification tape and a composite tinned-copper/nylon braided screen—are laid up around a profiled elastomeric cradle. Type 11 adds 1 screened pilot core (4 cores total); Type 14 adds 1 unscreened earth + 1 unscreened pilot core in the main lay (5 cores total); Type 16 places 2 unscreened earth cores + 1 unscreened pilot core in the three outer interstices for a more compact diameter (6 cores total).

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do BS 6708 Type 11, Type 14 and Type 16 differ in core geometry?
All three are 640/1,100 V trailing cables laid up around a central elastomeric cradle with composite tinned-copper/nylon braided phase screens. Type 11 (3×16+16 mm²) is a 4-core design with 3 screened phase cores and 1 screened pilot core. Type 14 (25 to 95 mm²) is a 5-core cradle lay with 3 screened phase cores, 1 unscreened earth core and 1 unscreened pilot core. Type 16 (25 to 95 mm²) is a compact 6-core geometry with 3 screened phase cores around the cradle plus 2 unscreened split earth cores and 1 unscreened pilot core in the three outer interstices.
Why choose BS 6708 Type 16 over Type 14 for a given phase conductor size?
Because Type 16 splits the earth conductor into two interstitial cores and places the pilot core in the third outer interstice, the three phase cores form a tighter trefoil around the central cradle. At 3×50 mm², Type 16 has a maximum OD of 47.0 mm and weight of 4,200 kg/km versus 57.6 mm and 5,650 kg/km for Type 14—reducing minimum bend radius from 519 mm to 423 mm while maintaining the same 170 A current rating.
How do Types 11/14/16 differ from BS 6708 Types 7/7M/7S?
Types 7, 7M and 7S place an uninsulated stranded copper earth conductor in the centre of the cable in direct contact with the phase screens. Types 11, 14 and 16 replace that bare central earth with a resilient elastomeric cradle and use insulated earth conductors (plus composite copper/nylon phase screens in contact around the cradle).
What is the minimum dynamic bending radius for BS 6708 Types 11, 14 and 16?
The published datasheet minimum bending radius is 8 × maximum OD (264 mm) on Type 11 3×16+16 mm², and 9 × maximum OD on Type 14 (420 to 666 mm) and Type 16 (353 to 567 mm).
