Application fit

Is AS/NZS 2802 right for your machine?

All types power mobile plant. Pick the type for the machine's earth, pilot and screen design, then check the bending radius for the duty.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Which AS/NZS 2802 type should I choose?
Start from the machine's protection design. Types 409 and 440 are Class 2 trailing cables with composite screens for long, abrasive runs. Types 450, 451 and 455 are lighter Class 1 cables for draglines, shovels and stackers on slow reels. Type 412 adds steel armour for exposed feeder runs.
What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2?
Class 2 types use R-EP-90 insulation with thicker insulation and sheath walls, giving a more robust cable. Class 1 types use the higher-grade XR-EP-90, which allows thinner walls, so the cable is smaller and lighter for the same conductor size — useful on reels and materials-handling machines.
What bending radius should the reel or sheave allow?
As typical guidance: repeated reeling 10 × OD at 1.1 kV and 12 × OD from 3.3 kV; free flexing 6 × and 10 × OD; passing over sheaves 10 × and 20 × OD. Use the outer diameter from the size table and confirm the drum and sheave design with our engineers.
How are the earth and pilot conductors arranged?
It depends on the type. Types 409 and 440 earth through composite copper screens, with one central or three interstitial pilots. Types 441 and 441.1 have three earths and a central pilot. Types 450, 451 and 455 have two earths and one pilot. Type 412 has three earths and no pilot.
Can these cables be used in underground coal mines?
No. AS/NZS 2802 covers surface mining, underground metalliferous mining and general movable plant; underground coal mines need cables to the coal-mining standards. See our AS/NZS 1802 range and confirm the required type with our engineers.
