  • For composite-screened types (209, 210, 240, 245, 260), 'Screen / earth (mm²)' gives the metallic copper cross-section of each phase screen; for semiconductive-screened/cradle types (241, 241SF, 241 Superflex, 245UF, 275), it gives the cross-section of each of the three interstitial earth conductors.
  • Masses have been converted from kg/100 m to kg/km (× 10) for consistency across all PDP tables.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do AS/NZS 1802 underground cables (200-series) differ from AS/NZS 2802 surface mining cables (400-series)?
AS/NZS 1802 governs underground coal mining reeling and trailing cables (Types 209, 210, 240, 241, 245, 260, 275 up to 11/11 kV), which require tighter outer diameters for narrow roadways, specialised anti-corkscrewing cradle designs for high-speed shuttle cars (Type 275) and ultra-flexible multi-pilot cores for longwall shearer chains (Types 245/245UF). AS/NZS 2802 covers open-cut surface mining cables (Types 409–455 up to 33/33 kV) built with heavier wall thicknesses and UV/solar-stabilised sheaths.
When should I choose a semiconductive-screened cable (Type 241 / 245) over a composite-screened cable (Type 209 / 240)?
Composite-screened cables (Types 209 and 240) wrap each phase core in a tinned-copper/polyester braid that acts as both the earth screen and fault return path, suited to feeder runs and moderate trailing duty. Semiconductive-screened cables (Types 241, 241SF, 245 and 245UF) replace the metallic core braid with a flexible conductive elastomer layer and three interstitial earth cores, eliminating copper braid wire fatigue in tight monorail loops and longwall shearer cable handlers.
Why do Types 240, 245 and 245UF incorporate three pilot conductors instead of a single central pilot?
Longwall shearers and extended transformer-to-gate-end-box feeder runs require separate circuits for earth-continuity monitoring, pilot-relay lockout and machine telemetry. Providing three insulated pilot conductors (interstitial in Type 240, or laid up in the centre of the cradle in Types 245 and 245UF) allows parallel pilot connection on long runs so loop resistance stays below the 3 Ω/100 m protection relay trip threshold.
What prevents Type 275 shuttle car cables from corkscrewing under high-speed bi-directional reeling?
Underground coal shuttle cars reel and pay out cable rapidly under high tension around guide rollers, which can twist conventional screened cores into permanent 'corkscrews'. Type 275 omits individual metallic core braids and seats the three 1.1 kV R-EP-90 phase cores into a moulded semiconductive elastomer cradle with three interstitial earths, a central extensible pilot and an open-weave anti-torsion reinforcement locked into the HD-85-PCP sheath.
