FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do BS 6708 Type 62, Type 63 and Type 64 differ from one another?
All three are 640/1,100 V pliable wire-armoured 4 mm² cables with individual composite tinned-copper/nylon braided screens over every core. Type 62 has 2 screened cores (2×4 mm², 23.9–26.4 mm OD), Type 63 has 3 screened cores (3×4 mm², 24.8–27.3 mm OD), and Type 64 has 4 screened cores (4×4 mm², 26.4–29.9 mm OD).
How does BS 6708 Type 64 (4×4 mm²) differ from BS 6708 Type 70 (4×4 mm²)?
Type 64 is rated at 640/1,100 V (2.5 kV test voltage) and applies an individual composite copper/nylon braided screen over each of the four 4 mm² cores beneath the inner sheath and pliable wire armour. Type 70 has four unscreened 4 mm² cores inside the inner sheath and pliable wire armour (320/550 V datasheet rating, 1.5 kV test voltage).
What are the parallel screen and armour resistances for fault-loop calculations?
At 20 °C, the combined parallel DC resistance of the individual core screens is ≤ 5.5 Ω/km (Type 62), ≤ 3.9 Ω/km (Type 63) and ≤ 2.8 Ω/km (Type 64), while the galvanized steel pliable wire armour is ≤ 4.91, ≤ 4.63 and ≤ 4.16 Ω/km respectively.
What is the voltage drop of Types 62, 63 and 64 at 4 mm²?
The published voltage drop is 12.38 mV/A/m for single-phase 2-core Type 62, and 10.72 mV/A/m for three-phase 3-core Type 63 and 4-core Type 64.
