FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What does the designation (N)3GHSSHCH stand for under DIN VDE 0250-605?
(N) indicates a cable designed in accordance with German national standard DIN VDE 0250-605; 3G denotes cross-linked EPR rubber phase insulation (compound 3GI3); H (first) denotes semiconductive field-control layers; S (first) denotes the individual concentric copper phase earth screens (/3E); S (second) denotes the overall concentric copper monitoring conductor (ÜL) applied over the first inner sheath; H (second) denotes the halogen-free HM4 inner/intermediate sheaths; C denotes the galvanized steel wire braid armour; and H (final) denotes the halogen-free low-smoke HM4 outer sheath.
How does (N)3GHSSHCH differ from (N)3GHSSYCY?
Both cables share the same double-screened MV electrical core, overall ÜL monitoring conductor and galvanized steel wire braid armour based on DIN VDE 0250-605. The difference is the triple sheath compound: (N)3GHSSYCY uses PVC (YM5 / DMV6) for the first inner sheath, intermediate sheath and outer sheath, whereas (N)3GHSSHCH replaces all three sheaths with halogen-free, low-smoke thermoplastic compound HM4 (IEC 60754-1/2) for confined tunnels and underground workings with strict smoke and acid-gas limits.
Why does (N)3GHSSHCH have both individual phase screens (/3E) and an overall monitoring conductor (ÜL)?
This double-screen architecture provides two independent layers of electrical safety in underground mining and tunnelling. Each 3GI3 EPR phase core is enclosed by its own concentric copper wire screen (/3E) to confine the radial electric field and carry earth-fault currents. Separated by the first HM4 inner sheath, an overall concentric copper wire screen (ÜL, Überwachungsleiter) surrounds the entire core assembly beneath the second inner sheath and steel wire braid armour — enabling earth-leakage and pilot interlock relays to trip the MV breaker immediately if rockfall or crushing penetrates the armour.
Are both 16/3E and 25/3E earth screen cross-sections available on 25 mm² and 35 mm² (N)3GHSSHCH cables?
Yes. Standard German mine executions to DIN VDE 0250-605 pair 3×25 mm² and 3×35 mm² phase conductors with a 3×16/3E split concentric copper screen (OD 42.7–48.3 mm at 3.6/6 kV), whereas UK/international tunnel specifications often specify an enlarged 3×25/3E screen on 25 mm² and 35 mm² sizes (OD 47.2–54.0 mm at 3.6/6 kV). Both configurations are listed in the specification table.
