Construction

Layer by layer

Three MEPR-insulated Class 5 tinned copper phase cores—identified by Red, Yellow and Brown textile tapes and individually screened with a composite tinned-copper/nylon braid—are laid up around a profiled elastomeric cradle (3-core Type 201) or together with one unscreened Green/Yellow earth core (4-core Type 211), enclosed in an extruded PCP inner bedding sheath, armoured with pliable stranded galvanized steel wires and finished with a heavy-duty black PCP outer jacket bearing a longitudinal yellow stripe.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between BS 6708 Type 201 and Type 211?
Both are 640/1,100 V pliable wire-armoured trailing cables with three composite copper/nylon braided screened MEPR phase cores (Red, Yellow, Brown), an extruded PCP inner sheath, galvanized steel pliable wire armour and a heavy-duty black PCP outer jacket with a longitudinal yellow stripe. Type 201 is a 3-core cable (3×10 to 3×120 mm²) that uses the screens and armour as the earth path, whereas Type 211 adds a fourth unscreened Green/Yellow earth conductor (10 to 70 mm²).
How do BS 6708 Type 201/211 differ from BS 6708 Type 20/21?
Types 201 and 211 include individual composite tinned-copper/nylon braided earth screens over each phase core beneath the PCP inner sheath and pliable wire armour, plus a longitudinal yellow identification stripe on the outer jacket. Types 20 and 21 have unscreened cores separated by an elastomeric cradle.
Why does the outer PCP jacket have a longitudinal yellow stripe?
Per BS 6708:1998, the longitudinal yellow stripe on the black polychloroprene outer sheath visually distinguishes 640/1,100 V individually screened pliable wire-armoured trailing cables (Types 201 and 211) in underground mine roadways and surface quarries.
What is the minimum bending radius and maximum pulling tension for Types 201 and 211?
Across all 16 configurations from 10 to 120 mm², the minimum bending radius is 10 × overall cable diameter (400 to 810 mm on Type 201; 430 to 910 mm on Type 211), and maximum pulling tension ranges from 180 kgf (3×10 mm²) up to 2,000 kgf (95–120 mm²).
