  • BS 6708 Part 5 control cable numbers encode the core count in the last two digits: Type 506 = 6×1.34 mm², Type 512 = 12×1.34 mm², Type 518 = 18×1.34 mm², Type 524 = 24×0.93 mm².
  • Type 506 uses a thicker 3.5 mm inner sheath so its inner sheath diameter (14.8–16.8 mm) and overall OD (22.1–23.6 mm) match Type 512, allowing shared flameproof gland hardware.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do BS 6708 Types 506, 512, 518 and 524 differ?
The last two digits specify the number of individually screened control cores: Type 506 has 6 cores × 1.34 mm² (16 A at 25 °C), Type 512 has 12 cores × 1.34 mm² (13 A), Type 518 has 18 cores × 1.34 mm² (11 A), and Type 524 has 24 cores × 0.93 mm² (8 A).
Why do Type 506 (6-core) and Type 512 (12-core) have the same overall diameter (22.1–23.6 mm)?
Type 506 is extruded with a thicker 3.5 mm inner sheath (compared with 1.8 mm on Type 512) so that both cables share the exact same 14.8–16.8 mm inner sheath diameter, 7/0.45 mm pliable armour and 22.1–23.6 mm outer diameter, allowing mines to use identical flameproof cable glands for both 6-core and 12-core control cables.
Why is every control core individually braided-screened in addition to the pliable steel wire armour?
Individual tinned-copper/nylon braided screens laid in mutual contact ensure that any internal insulation fault or core-to-core crush is intercepted by an earthed metallic screen before bridging two control circuits and causing an unintended machine movement.
What is the voltage drop of Types 506, 512, 518 and 524?
For Types 506, 512 and 518 (1.34 mm² conductors), voltage drop is 34 mV/A/m (DC or single-phase) and 30 mV/A/m (3-phase). For Type 524 (0.93 mm² conductors), voltage drop is 50 mV/A/m (DC/1-phase) and 43 mV/A/m (3-phase).
