Compare BS 6883 and BS 7917 offshore cables, separating voltage scope, flame spread, circuit integrity, sheath properties and project acceptance evidence.

BS 6883 and BS 7917 address fixed wiring in ships and offshore units, but fire-performance claims must be read carefully. Flame propagation, smoke emission, halogen acid gas and circuit integrity are different properties. Passing one test does not establish the others.

Check the actual standard edition and voltage scope

BSI lists BS 6883:1999 for elastomer-insulated fixed-wiring cables with rated voltage up to and including 8,700/15,000 V. Its applications include lighting, power, control, instrumentation and propulsion circuits. A 19/33 kV cable cannot be described as covered by that scope without a separate applicable specification.

BSI lists BS 7917:1999 for elastomer-insulated fire-resistant cables with limited circuit integrity and rated voltage up to and including 3,300/3,300 V. The original reference to a BS 7917:2021 edition is not relied on. Verify any project amendment or additional specification directly in the contract documents.

Flame retardancy is not circuit survival

A flame-spread test assesses how a cable specimen or bundle behaves under a defined fire exposure. It does not demonstrate that a connected fire pump, alarm or shutdown circuit will remain operational throughout an actual incident. Circuit-integrity testing instead assesses electrical continuity or insulation performance under its own specified conditions.

The legacy IEC 60331-21 procedure is a fire-alone circuit-integrity test for cables up to 0.6/1 kV, used with its corresponding apparatus requirements. IEC 60331-11 describes fire-alone exposure at a flame temperature of at least 750°C. These references must not be relabelled as a universal 950°C, 180-minute hydrocarbon-fire test with mechanical shock. The IEC catalogue marks these legacy publications withdrawn; confirm the required edition or successor with the project authority.

A certificate must identify the exact test, cable construction, voltage, duration, temperature and any shock or water exposure. Comparing flame-burner duration with circuit-integrity duration in one ranking chart is misleading because the tests evaluate different outcomes.

Read the construction and sheath requirements separately

A fire-resistant cable may incorporate a mica-based barrier, but tape count, overlap and material description do not prove a fire rating. Verify the tested complete construction. Similarly, a sheath designation such as SW4 should be supported by the applicable compound requirements and test records, not by unsupported percentages copied from a marketing table.

  • Conductor material, class, cross-section and resistance, with suitable terminals.
  • Insulation and screen arrangement for the required voltage and earthing system.
  • Bedding, armour and sheath properties for installation and environmental exposure.
  • Fire propagation, circuit integrity, smoke and acid-gas requirements, each with its own method and acceptance criteria.

Armour, bonding and environmental exposure

For single-core AC systems, metallic-layer material, bonding and arrangement require careful assessment of induced losses and heating. Non-magnetic armour may be appropriate, but a generic instruction to use one particular braid metal is not a substitute for the approved construction and installation design. Even non-magnetic metallic layers can carry induced currents.

Mineral-oil resistance does not automatically demonstrate resistance to drilling fluids or completion brines. If mud resistance is required, specify the actual fluids, exposure conditions and qualification criteria. A BS cable designation is not automatically interchangeable with a NEK 606 or IEEE 1580 construction.

Evidence to request before acceptance

Ask for the exact cable and standard edition, construction drawing, traceable routine test results and applicable fire and environmental type-test reports. Confirm that glands, joints, supports, routing and power-source arrangements satisfy the system’s required emergency function. The cable alone cannot guarantee operation of the complete emergency circuit.
