FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does BS 7917 A FR use galvanized steel wire braid (GSWB) rather than heavy round wire armour (SWA)?
Offshore modules require tight-radius routing through congested deck bulkheads and multi-cable transit frames (MCTs), and platforms experience continuous structural vibration. Braided steel wire armour (GSWB) provides superior flexibility (6× to 8× OD bend radius), lower weight and better vibration fatigue resistance than rigid SWA.
Why are single-core BS 7917 A FR cables armoured with phosphor-bronze wire braid (PBWB)?
On single-core AC power feeders, magnetic steel braid would trap alternating magnetic flux and overheat from induced eddy currents. Non-magnetic phosphor-bronze wire braid (PBWB) eliminates inductive heating while maintaining full marine corrosion and impact protection.
What does the UKOOA code WM signify on BS 7917 A FR cables?
Under the UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) coding system, the first letter 'W' designates a 600/1000 V fire-resistant EPR-insulated power cable with an elastomeric inner covering, galvanized steel wire braid and SW4 elastomeric outer sheath; 'M' denotes metric conductor sizing.
Which cable glands are compatible with BS 7917 A FR in Zone 1 hazardous areas?
Use ATEX/IECEx certified dual-seal flameproof deluge-protected glands (such as CMP E1XF / PX2KX or Hawke 501/453 Universal) that clamp and earth the GSWB/PBWB wire braid while sealing both the SW4 inner bedding and outer sheath.
