Application fit

Is EN 50306-3 right for your machine?

EN 50306-3 provides a standalone EMC-screened and thin-sheathed 1-, 2-, 3- or 4-core railway signal cable for tachometer, RTD Pt100, audio/intercom and MVB/RS-485 links, and also serves as the individually screened pair/quad sub-element inside EN 50306-4 multipair cables.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Screened Pt100 RTD sensors, wheel-slide tachometers, cab intercoms, TCMS serial pairs and sub-elements.

VFD inverter to AC motor screened feeder

Suitable

Low surface transfer impedance (≤ 100 mΩ/m at 30 MHz) protects low-level railway signals near traction converters.

Trailing & towing

Not suitable

Fixed rolling-stock cabinet and coach harness cable; not for external trailing.

Use EN 50264-3-2 MMS

Energy chain / drag chain

Not suitable

When multiple pairs or >4 cores are needed in one jacket, select EN 50306-4.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the scope of EN 50306-3 within the EN 50306 series?
EN 50306-3 covers 1, 2 (twisted pair), 3 (twisted triad) or 4 (twisted quad) thin-wall EN 50306-2 cores enclosed in a tinned-copper wire braid screen ('S') and a 0.30 mm thin-wall EM 104 cross-linked outer sheath ('M'). For 2 to 48 cores or multi-pair bundles under an overall sheath, see EN 50306-4.
How are the 1 to 4 cores colour-coded under EN 50306-3?
Unless numbered white cores are requested, EN 50306-3 specifies a distinct 4-colour sequence: 1st core = White, 2nd core = Blue, 3rd core = Red, and 4th core = Yellow.
Why is EN 50306-3 3×0.5 SM or 4×0.5 SM widely used for railway RTD temperature sensors?
3-wire and 4-wire Pt100 RTD sensors on traction motors and axle boxes require balanced lead resistance, low-capacitance screening (ZT ≤ 100 mΩ/m) and an oil/fuel-resistant cross-linked EM 104 jacket in a tiny ~4.1–4.5 mm diameter.
Can EN 50306-3 elements be cabled together into a larger harness?
Yes. EN 50306-4 Type 5P/7P multipair cables are constructed by stranding multiple EN 50306-3 screened pairs/triads/quads together beneath an outer EM 104 sheath.
