FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does EN 50306-2 specify 19-wire and 37-wire concentric stranding instead of generic Class 5?
To achieve a 0.25–0.30 mm thin insulation wall without thin spots over irregular rope-lay bundles, EN 50306-2 mandates geometrically true concentric stranding (19 strands for 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 mm²; 37 strands for 1.5 and 2.5 mm²). This produces a perfectly round conductor and ultra-tight outer diameter tolerance for automated stripping and crimping.
How much smaller is EN 50306-2 compared with EN 50264-3-1?
For 1×0.5 mm², EN 50306-2 (300 V) has a nominal outer diameter of ~1.45 mm and weighs ~6 kg/km, compared with ~2.1 mm and ~9 kg/km for EN 50264-3-1 (600 V) — saving more than 50 % of cross-sectional bundle area in dense TCMS cabinets.
How is EN 50306-2 used inside EN 50306-3 and EN 50306-4 cables?
EN 50306-2 thin-wall insulated wires serve as the basic core elements that are screened and sheathed to form EN 50306-3 (screened single/pair/triad/quad) and EN 50306-4 (multicore and multipair) railway cables.
What do Class P and Class E mean in EN 50306-2?
Class P designates −25 °C low-temperature rating, while Class E designates −40 °C extreme cold rating per EN 50306-1.
