FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What are the mandatory electrical parameters of a MIL-STD-1553B data bus cable?
Section 4.5.1.1 of MIL-STD-1553B specifies a characteristic impedance of 78 Ω ± 5 Ω at 1.0 MHz, core-to-core capacitance ≤ 30.0 pF/ft (98.4 pF/m), core-to-shield capacitance unbalance ≤ 2 %, attenuation ≤ 1.5 dB/100ft (4.92 dB/100m) at 1.0 MHz, ≥ 90 % shield coverage, and ≥ 12 twists/ft (≤ 25.4 mm lay).
Why does M17/176-00002 use silver-plated high-strength copper alloy instead of pure soft copper?
At 24 AWG (0.20 mm²), pure annealed copper can stretch or break during high-density airframe harness pulling and crimp termination. ASTM B624 high-strength copper alloy increases tensile breaking load by > 50 % and flex life by 3× while silver plating preserves 1 MHz skin-depth conductivity.
When should I use low-loss ePTFE 22 AWG or double-shielded MIL-STD-1553B cable?
Use M17/176-00002 (Ø 3.28 mm, PFA) for standard fighter/helicopter harnesses and +200 °C engine-bay zones; use 22 AWG expanded-PTFE low-loss variants (≤ 2.8 dB/100m @ 1 MHz) for large transport aircraft trunks, or double-shielded EN 3375 variants in open composite airframes exposed to HIRF radar fields.
Which connectors mate with MIL-STD-1553B twinax cables?
MIL-STD-1553B cables terminate to standard concentric twinax/triax bayonet plugs (TRB / TRS), threaded TRT plugs, and MIL-DTL-38999 Series III size 8 twinax contacts.
