FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does BS EN 60702-1 mineral-insulated cable outlast polymeric cables in extreme fires?
Polymeric cables rely on organic insulation that decomposes above 300–400 °C, leaving a fragile mica-ash barrier. BS EN 60702-1 uses compressed inorganic magnesium oxide (MgO, melting at 2800 °C) inside a solid seamless copper sheath (melting at 1083 °C), so it neither burns nor degrades up to 1000 °C.
Why must mineral-insulated cables be terminated with BS EN 60702-2 brass pots?
Compressed magnesium oxide powder is hygroscopic and will absorb atmospheric moisture at cut ends if left unsealed. Screwing a BS EN 60702-2 brass pot onto the stripped copper sheath and filling it with moisture-curing compound permanently seals the MgO dielectric.
When should 500 V Light Duty versus 750 V Heavy Duty MICC be selected?
500 V Light Duty (1.0 to 4.0 mm²) is designed for BS 5839-1 Enhanced fire alarm loops, emergency lighting and BMS control circuits. 750 V Heavy Duty features a thicker MgO dielectric wall and copper sheath for three-phase life-safety power feeders up to 240 mm².
Does the seamless copper sheath eliminate the need for a separate earth core?
Yes. Under BS 7671 and BS EN 60702-1, the low-resistance seamless copper tube provides a continuous 360-degree circuit protective conductor (CPC) with cross-sectional conductance exceeding the phase conductors on most multi-core sizes.
