Distinguish ARINC 429, ARINC 708 and MIL-STD-1553 cable and topology requirements; shared nominal impedance does not make assemblies interchangeable.

Bus protocol and cable are separate requirements

ARINC 429, ARINC 708 and MIL-STD-1553 are not interchangeable interfaces. Cable electrical characteristics are only one part of a system that also includes signal encoding, transmitter/receiver behavior, coupling, topology and terminations.

ARINC 429 normally uses a unidirectional transmitter-to-receiver arrangement; MIL-STD-1553 uses a command/response bus with defined coupling and termination. Do not add a 78 Ω end resistor to an ARINC 429 installation merely because its cable has a similar nominal impedance.

Specify more than nominal impedance

Identify the exact equipment interface, aircraft or bench drawing, cable specification and part number. Check characteristic impedance with its measurement conditions, attenuation, capacitance, conductor resistance, shielding and connector assembly requirements.

A cable that meets a nominal 78 Ω target has not thereby demonstrated compatibility with every ARINC 429, 708 or 1553 installation. Copper alloy, insulation, shielding and environmental qualification can also differ between accepted parts.

An illustrative impedance step from 78 Ω to 120 Ω gives a simple reflection coefficient (120−78)/(120+78)= 0.212. This is a basic transmission-line example, not proof that any given bus will fail or that all three interfaces have identical terminations.

Aircraft qualification must be traceable

On-aircraft wiring must follow the approved design and applicable airworthiness process. Generic fluoropolymer insulation, laser-markability or a laboratory impedance reading does not establish that approval.

Request the exact applicable flammability method, specimen arrangement, limits and traceable report. Do not substitute a general interior-material burn test or an unsupported FAR compliance statement for the wire requirement.

A test-bench cable is not automatically acceptable for flight installation. Identify whether the order is for a simulator, maintenance test lead or an approved aircraft harness before making material or connector substitutions.

Assembly and acceptance

Preserve specified pairing, polarity, twist, shield termination and stub/coupler arrangements. Check continuity and insulation without applying tests that could damage connected avionics. Follow equipment instructions for test setup and isolation.

Require electrical and environmental evidence appropriate to the assembly, including signal checks under the specified configuration. No in-house qualification certificate or compatibility across all aircraft buses is claimed in this article.
