FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does FLR5Y use plated copper strands instead of bare copper?
Above +150 °C, bare copper oxidises rapidly in air, forming brittle black cupric oxide that increases contact resistance. FLR5Y therefore uses tinned copper (up to +180 °C), silver-plated copper (up to +200 °C) or nickel-plated copper (up to +260 °C).
What is the difference between FLR5Y (PTFE), FLR6Y (FEP) and FLR7Y (ETFE)?
All three are fluoropolymers: 5Y is PTFE (-65 to +200/+260 °C, paste-extruded and sintered, highest thermal rating and gas permeability for O2 reference air), 6Y is melt-extrudable FEP (-65 to +180/+200 °C, continuous long lengths), and 7Y is ETFE (-65 to +150 °C Class D, highest mechanical cut-through and stiffness).
Why do wideband lambda (oxygen) sensors specifically require 19-strand FLR5Y-A PTFE wire?
Planar zirconia lambda sensors draw reference oxygen molecules through the microscopic interstitial channels between the 19 concentric nickel-plated strands and through the breathable sintered PTFE insulation—and must survive radiant exhaust pipe heat above +200 °C.
Can FLR5Y be stripped and crimped on standard automotive harness machines?
Yes, using sharp V-radius or die-type fluoropolymer stripping blades and B-crimp barrels calibrated for plated concentric conductors.
