FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What does every element of the designation A-2Y(L)2Y2YB2Y mean?
'A' = outdoor telecommunication/signalling cable (Außenkabel), '2Y' = polyethylene core insulation, '(L)2Y' = aluminum-laminated polyethylene moisture-barrier inner sheath, '2Y' = second extruded polyethylene bedding sheath, 'B' = double galvanised steel tape armour (Bewehrung), and '2Y' = polyethylene outer jacket.
Why does A-2Y(L)2Y2YB2Y have two '2Y' layers between the aluminum tape and the steel armour?
The first '(L)2Y' layer bonds the copolymer-coated aluminum moisture barrier into a sealed inner sheath, while the second extruded '2Y' PE layer forms a tough dielectric and mechanical cushion so the sharp edges of the double steel tape armour ('B') cannot puncture the aluminum barrier during trackside laying.
Why are railway signalling cables twisted in star-quads (n×4) rather than simple pairs?
Star-quad twisting places the two wires of Pair 1 diagonally opposite each other and Pair 2 on the perpendicular diagonal, achieving higher packing density and superior magnetic symmetry against trackside interference.
When should I choose 1.4 mm conductors over 0.9 mm conductors?
0.9 mm conductors (≤ 56.6 Ω/km loop resistance) are used for standard telecom, axle-counter data, and short interlocking circuits, whereas 1.4 mm conductors (≤ 23.4 Ω/km loop resistance) are chosen for longer-distance point-machine control and block signalling.
