FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Why do 25 kV AC railway pantograph cables specify a 26/45 kV (Umax 52 kV) voltage rating?
On a single-phase 25 kV AC overhead catenary system (EN 50163), the phase-to-earth voltage Uo is 25 kV nominal, rising to 27.5 kV continuous and 29 kV for 5 minutes during regenerative braking—plus steep Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB) switching transients and pantograph bounce arcs. Therefore, a standard 18/30 kV cable (Uo = 18 kV) is under-rated; railway standards mandate the 26/45 kV class (Uo = 26 kV, U = 45 kV, Umax = 52 kV, routine tested at 65 kV AC).
When is unscreened (N)TMCWOEU 26-45 kV used on a train roof versus screened (N)TMCGCHXOEUK 26-45 kV?
Unscreened (N)TMCWOEU 26-45 kV is used for short, open-air roof jumpers (typically 0.8 to 2.5 m) between the pantograph horn/frame, roof disconnectors and VCB supported on stand-off post insulators, where there is no space for 500 mm HV stress-control terminations. When the 25 kV HV line runs directly along the earthed carbody roof, through roof ducts, between coaches, or down into the underframe main transformer, screened (N)TMCGCHXOEUK 26-45 kV is mandatory for touch safety and radial field confinement.
Why is a flexible cable used on the train roof instead of rigid copper busbars?
The pantograph base frame is mounted on pneumatic/elastomeric insulators and vibrates continuously while tracking the overhead contact wire at 160–350 km/h. A flexible Class 5/6 tinned copper jumper decouples this mechanical vibration from the brittle porcelain or composite bushings of the Vacuum Circuit Breaker and roof transformer lead-through.
Can we order this cable in a halogen-free EN 45545-2 HL3 version?
Yes. Both unscreened (N)TMCHXOEU 26/45 kV and screened (N)TMCGCHXOEUK 26/45 kV are manufactured with halogen-free 'HX' elastomer sheaths certified to EN 45545-2 HL3.
