FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why do modern military aircraft like the F-35 use 270 V DC ground power instead of 115/200 V 400 Hz AC or 28 V DC?
Defined in MIL-STD-704F, 270 V DC (typically configured as ±135 V DC referenced to aircraft structure) delivers 70 kW to 150 kW for high-power active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, electro-hydrostatic flight actuators, and thermal management with much lighter cabling and zero 400 Hz reactive inductance drop.
Why is a dedicated equipment grounding conductor and screened interlock bundle critical on 270 V DC GPU cables?
Unlike 28 V DC, a 270 V DC arc cannot self-extinguish if a plug is pulled under load. The screened control cores run a high-speed pilot interlock loop and differential current-fault monitor that trips the solid-state GPU output within microseconds if the plug unlatches or ground continuity is lost.
Why are the control and voltage-sense cores copper-braid screened inside the GP 270 V DC cable?
Solid-state 270 V DC ground power units use high-frequency PWM IGBT or SiC rectifiers. Screening the remote voltage-sense and interlock cores with a ≥ 85 % tinned copper braid prevents switching ripple on the 2×50–95 mm² main cores from disturbing the GPU closed-loop voltage regulator.
Does the outer PUR jacket resist polyalphaolefin (PAO) avionics coolant and JP-8 fuel?
Yes. Fighter maintenance bays expose apron cables to synthetic PAO radar/avionics dielectric coolant, JP-5/JP-8 turbine fuel, and MIL-PRF-83282 hydraulic fluid. Our cross-linked ether-PUR jacket resists chemical swelling, cuts, and -40 °C cold cracking. Each production drum undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance verification, insulation
