FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Decode every letter in '(N)TMCGCHXOEUK 26/45 kV'—what does each symbol mean?
'(N)' = Based on German VDE standard; 'TM' = Medium/High-voltage flexible rubber cable (Trossenleitung Mittelspannung); 'C' = Inner semiconducting elastomer layer; 'G' = 3GI3 EPR rubber insulation + outer semiconducting elastomer layer; 'C' = Concentric tinned copper wire/braid screen; 'HX' = Halogen-free cross-linked elastomer sheath; 'OEU' = Oil-resistant & flame-retardant; 'K' = Kälteflexibel (-50 °C cold-resistant).
Why is the concentric copper screen ('C') mandatory when routing 25 kV AC from the train roof down to an underframe traction transformer?
On distributed-power high-speed trains (EMUs), the main traction transformer is mounted underneath the coach floor, so the 25 kV AC cable must pass through a vertical metal shaft inside the passenger carbody and across inter-car gangways. The grounded concentric copper screen ('C') confines the 25 kV electric field entirely inside the cable, eliminating corona on the jacket surface and ensuring 100 % touch safety per EN 50153.
Why is EN 45545-2 HL3 required on this cable?
High-speed passenger trains operating through underground cross-city and alpine tunnels fall into Operation Category 3/4 (Design Category A/N), which requires the highest European railway fire safety rating: Hazard Level HL3 under Requirement Sets R15 (interior) and R16 (exterior).
Does the outer semiconducting layer ('G') strip cleanly for plug-in HV transformer terminations?
Yes. The outer semiconducting elastomer is formulated with controlled adhesion so installers can peel it cleanly by hand without scoring the 11.5 mm 3GI3 EPR wall when fitting Pfisterer Connex or Euromold 52 kV separable connectors.
