Distinguish railway power, control and brake jumpers by approved interface, electrical loading and full inter-car movement.

Three functions, not three interchangeable plugs

UIC 552 train-line connections serve electrical energy supply between vehicles. UIC 558 connections support control and information functions. UIC 541-5 interfaces are associated with electropneumatic braking and emergency-brake override arrangements.

These labels identify different interface families, not a universal cable drawing for every train. Use the vehicle-approved connector part number, contact allocation, mating arrangement and circuit documentation. Do not infer voltage, current or conductor section from the UIC number alone.

Power jumpers need coordinated protection

Select the cable, contact system, insulation, current rating, temperature rise and mechanical support together. Check operating voltage, fault duty, train configuration and the supply protection. A larger conductor does not compensate for an inadequately rated contact or termination.

Interlocks and pilot contacts may form part of the approved safety system, but their presence is not permission to uncouple a live high-power connection. Follow the vehicle isolation, verification and handling procedure. No generic 15 ms interruption guarantee is made here.

Control and brake circuits need exact pinouts

UIC 558 variants can serve different control and information arrangements. Do not assume every 18-pole assembly contains the same conductor sections or a particular digital-bus pair, and do not assume direct compatibility with an older 13-pole socket.

For the EP brake interface, connector switching elements and end-of-train arrangements form part of the system design. The cited Schaltbau range includes different cable/core arrangements depending on the assembly. A generic nine-core sketch cannot replace the approved brake circuit drawing.

Check voltage drop using the actual load distribution

The current in a train-length conductor changes as loads are connected along the train. Calculate each segment and contact contribution for the required simultaneous operating conditions, including the return path and temperature. Verify pickup and holding voltage at the most disadvantaged device.

A basic arithmetic check exposes an unsafe assumption: if an assumed loop resistance were 8.05 ohms and the full current 12.8 A, the drop would be 103.04 V. That cannot be described as acceptable for a 24 V supply, and would leave only 6.96 V from a 110 V source. These are hypothetical numbers, not a compliant brake design.

Qualify the complete moving assembly

Include yaw, pitch, roll, longitudinal movement and the worst installed loop geometry. Check plug-neck curvature, strain relief, torsion, impact, weather and wash exposure. Conductor class or a small strand diameter alone does not establish a guaranteed number of cycles.

Railway fire performance must be demonstrated for the specified application and construction. A sheath material or a general rail-cable standard is not automatic HL3 approval. Keep connector maintenance, pin resistance, sealing and mechanical inspection in the service plan.

Information for an assembly quotation

Provide the vehicle interface drawing, connector identities, wiring allocation, installed and free lengths, motion envelope, environment and required qualification. Any replacement needs the responsible vehicle engineering approval, particularly for braking and emergency functions. No proprietary multi-million-cycle test or universal railway approval is claimed.
