FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does a 1.27 mm (0.050 inch) pitch ribbon cable mate with a 2.54 mm (0.100 inch) PCB header?
Standard 2-row 2.54 mm (0.100 inch) IDC box headers stagger their insulation-displacement forks across two rows offset by half a pitch (1.27 mm). A 1.27 mm pitch ribbon cable aligns every odd conductor with Row A and every even conductor with Row B in a single press stroke.
How is characteristic impedance controlled on an unshielded flat ribbon cable?
By terminating every alternate conductor to ground in a Ground-Signal-Ground (G-S-G) pinout on the IDC header, UL 2651 provides a controlled 105 Ω single-ended impedance and low crosstalk for high-speed digital buses.
What do the width values in the size table represent?
For flat ribbon cables, the nominal width equals Ways × 1.27 mm (for example, 20-way = 25.40 mm wide × 0.89 mm thick).
Can the conductors be separated for discrete crimping or soldering?
Yes. The co-extruded web between adjacent 28 AWG conductors is grooved so assembly technicians can zip-split individual conductors or groups cleanly without exposing the copper strands.
