FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does UL AWM 5170 specify 27 % nickel-plated copper (ASTM B355 Class 27) instead of standard 2 % or 10 % nickel plating?
Standard 2 % or 10 % nickel-plated copper is only rated up to +250 °C or +350 °C before copper diffuses through the thin nickel layer. A heavy 27 % by weight nickel cladding (ASTM B355 Class 27) provides a permanent diffusion barrier at +450 °C while keeping electrical resistance much lower than pure nickel.
How does UL AWM 5170 compare with UL 5107 or Type MG single-core wire?
All three are +450 °C, 600 V AC mica-tape and glass-braid constructions; UL Style 5170 uses a streamlined phlogopite mica tape + single saturant-treated E-glass braid profile optimized for compact appliance harnesses and automated stripping.
When should I upgrade from UL AWM 5170 (+450 °C) to CERAFIL CN8 (+800 °C)?
Use UL AWM 5170 for all UL-recognised 600 V appliance, oven, and band-heater leads up to +450 °C continuous (+550 °C peak). When ambient furnace temperatures exceed +500 °C continuously, E-glass begins to soften — upgrade to CERAFIL CN8 with pure Nickel 200 and alumino-silicate ceramic braid.
Is a slight wisp of smoke normal during the very first heat-up above +300 °C?
Yes. The organic anti-fray saturant applied to the outer E-glass braid for clean stripping volatilises during the first excursion above +300 °C, leaving the inorganic phlogopite mica and glass fibre insulation intact for +450 °C service.
