FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why do motor and transformer manufacturers specify UL 3271 over UL 1015?
When motor stators and transformer coils are dipped in insulating varnish and baked at 150–165 °C, thermoplastic PVC (UL 1015) softens, deforms under lacing cord pressure and exudes plasticiser into the varnish. UL 3271 uses thermoset cross-linked polyolefin (XLPE) that holds its shape and dielectric strength through baking and +125 °C continuous service.
How does UL 3271 compare with UL 3173 / SIS?
Both UL 3271 and UL 3173 are 600 V 125 °C 30-mil XLPE appliance/motor lead wires. UL 3173 additionally passes stricter flame/crush tests and is frequently dual-listed with UL 44 Type SIS for utility switchboard wiring.
Is UL 3271 available in halogen-free formulations?
Yes. We offer both standard flame-retardant XLPE and zero-halogen cross-linked polyolefin (XLPO) compounds certified to UL 3271 and CSA CL1251.
What voltage and temperature are covered by CSA CL1251?
CSA C22.2 No. 210 Type CL1251 certifies cross-linked polyethylene coil and motor lead wire for 600 V RMS at +125 °C.
