Application fit

Is UL AWM 2464 / 2517 right for your machine?

UL 2464 is the global standard 300 V shielded interconnect cable for RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 serial interfaces, PLC I/O, barcode scanners and scales, while UL 2517 adds a +105 °C oil-resistant PVC outer jacket favored on Japanese and North American CNC machine tools and servo encoders.

Fixed installation

Suitable

RS-232/422/485 data links, CNC servo encoder harnesses, PLC I/O trunks and industrial instrumentation.

VFD inverter to AC motor screened feeder

Suitable

Dual shield (100 % Al-foil + tinned-Cu drain wire + ≥85 % tinned-Cu braid) blocks broadband HF and LF noise.

Trailing & towing

With conditions

UL 2517 oil-resistant grade handles machine-tool splash and occasional flex; not for continuous high-speed drag chains.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between UL AWM Style 2464 and Style 2517?
Both are 300 V multi-conductor shielded cables with a 0.81 mm (32 mil) PVC outer jacket. UL Style 2464 is rated +80 °C for general electronic, computer and RS-232/485 applications, whereas UL Style 2517 is rated +105 °C with oil-resistant PVC insulation and sheath, making it the preferred specification for CNC machine tools, servo encoders and industrial automation.
Why combine an aluminium/Mylar foil shield with a tinned-copper braid shield?
A 100 % coverage aluminium/polyester foil tape blocks high-frequency RF interference above 10 MHz (and includes a tinned-copper drain wire for fast pin termination), while the ≥85 % tinned-copper wire braid provides low DC resistance and low-frequency electromagnetic shielding from 10 kHz to 10 MHz plus mechanical pull relief at the connector backshell.
Can UL 2464 / 2517 be ordered with twisted pairs instead of cabled single cores?
Yes. Both styles cover cabled single cores as well as twisted pairs (1P to 25P) or mixed power + signal gauges (e.g. 2×18 AWG power + 2×2P×24 AWG encoder feedback).
What core insulation style is used inside UL 2464 and UL 2517?
UL 2464 typically uses UL 1061 semi-rigid PVC (10-mil wall) or UL 1007 PVC (16-mil wall) cores, while UL 2517 uses 105 °C PVC cores.
