Application fit

Is NC right for your machine?

Engineered for long multi-pair Type N thermocouple trunk runs in steel plants, ethylene crackers, boilers and power stations where true Nicrosil/Nisil (NX) cable would have excessive loop resistance (1.35 Ω/m) or cost.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Can KCB (Cu/CuNi for Type K) be used instead of NC (Cu/CuNi for Type N)?
No. Although both KCB and NC use Copper (+) and Copper-Nickel (−) conductors, the Nickel percentage in the negative leg is formulated differently: KCB generates ~4.10 mV at +100 °C to match Type K, whereas NC generates ~2.77 mV at +100 °C to match Type N. Mixing them causes a ~13 µV/°C cold-junction error.
What is the difference between NCA and NCB under IEC 60584-3?
NCB is calibrated for transition junction temperatures from 0 °C to +100 °C, whereas NCA is calibrated over an extended 0 °C to +200 °C junction range. Both hold a Class 2 tolerance of ±2.5 °C (±65 µV).
Why does NC have 73 % lower loop resistance than true NX extension cable?
True NX uses Nicrosil (98 µΩ·cm) and Nisil (37 µΩ·cm), giving ~1.35 Ω/m per 1.0 mm² pair. NC replaces the positive leg with pure Copper (1.72 µΩ·cm) and the negative leg with low-nickel CuNi (~34 µΩ·cm), dropping loop resistance to ~0.36 Ω/m.
How should the screen and drain wire of NC be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of NC should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
