FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does GALVANICABLE provide galvanic isolation when it uses metallic copper conductors?
In high-voltage drives, substations and pulsed-power systems, sensors (such as current shunts, gate-driver monitors or thermocouple probes) sit on a floating high-voltage busbar while the data acquisition rack is referenced to earth. GALVANICABLE surrounds the inner twisted pair and its floating guard screen with a reinforced 10–15 kV polyimide/XLPE barrier before applying the outer earth screen, allowing the cable to safely bridge the HV boundary to an isolation amplifier or transformer.
Why are two separate isolated screens (inner guard + outer earth) required instead of a single overall shield?
If a single shield is grounded at the control room, capacitive displacement currents (I = C · dV/dt) from fast IGBT/SiC switching flow directly from the HV sensor into the signal conductors. The inner guard screen is tied to the local floating HV potential to intercept displacement current, while the outer screen is tied to earth across the 10–15 kV barrier.
Why is Partial Discharge (PD < 5 pC) testing critical on an isolated signal cable?
Even if a cable survives a 1-minute 10 kV hi-pot test, microscopic air voids inside the barrier would ionize continuously under 3–6 kV PWM switching, injecting broadband RF noise directly into the signal pair and eroding the insulation.
When should we use a non-metallic optical cable instead of GALVANICABLE?
For pure digital links over > 50 kV where optical transceivers can be powered at the HV deck, use a dielectric optical cable (such as GJFJV or GYFTY). Use GALVANICABLE when passive analogue sensors (shunts, RTDs, Rogowski coils, gate loops) cannot power active electronics at the HV potential.
