FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

When should I specify true NX extension cable instead of NC compensating cable for Type N thermocouples?
Specify true NX extension cable (Nicrosil/Nisil conductors) whenever Class 1 accuracy (±1.5 °C) is required—such as AMS 2750 aerospace heat-treatment furnaces—or when the thermocouple head temperature swings below 0 °C or up to +200 °C with minimal gradient error. Specify NC compensating cable (Cu/CuNi) when Class 2 tolerance (±2.5 °C) is acceptable and lower loop resistance or lower cable cost is prioritised.
Can Type K extension cable (KX) be used on a Type N thermocouple?
Never. Type K has a Seebeck slope of ~40.6 µV/°C at +100 °C whereas Type N is ~27.7 µV/°C. Wiring a Type N sensor with KX cable introduces ~0.32 °C of error for every 1 °C difference between the connection head and the control room.
How do I distinguish the NiCrSi (+) and NiSi (−) conductors in NX cable?
Both legs are non-magnetic, so a magnet test cannot separate them. Instead, check the insulation colour (IEC: + Pink / − White; ANSI: + Orange / − Red) or measure DC resistance: the Positive (+ NiCrSi) wire has ~2.6 times the resistance of the Negative (− NiSi) wire (0.98 Ω/m vs 0.37 Ω/m at 1.0 mm²).
How should the screen and drain wire of NX be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of NX should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
