Application fit

Is RCB / SCB right for your machine?

Because extending Platinum-Rhodium wire beyond the furnace head is prohibitively expensive, RCB/SCB (0…+100 °C) and RCA/SCA (0…+200 °C) are universally used to connect Type R and Type S high-temperature thermocouples (+1000…+1600 °C) to control rooms.

Fixed installation

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does the same cable (RCB / SCB) compensate for both Type R and Type S thermocouples?
Between 0 °C and +200 °C, the thermoelectric EMF curves of Type R (Pt13Rh-Pt: 0.646 mV at +100 °C) and Type S (Pt10Rh-Pt: 0.646 mV at +100 °C) are virtually identical. Therefore, IEC 60584-3 specifies the exact same Cu (+) / Cu11Ni (−) compensating alloy pair for both Type R and Type S.
Can RCB/SCB also be used with Type B (Pt30Rh-Pt6Rh) thermocouples?
No. Type B thermocouples generate almost zero EMF between 0 °C and +100 °C (−2 µV at +50 °C, +33 µV at +100 °C) and therefore use uncompensated pure Copper/Copper cable (IEC code BC) when the connection head stays below +100 °C. Using RCB/SCB on a Type B thermocouple would inject a false +646 µV offset at +100 °C.
What is the difference between RCB/SCB and RCA/SCA?
RCB/SCB is calibrated for connection head temperatures from 0 °C to +100 °C, whereas RCA/SCA uses a slightly modified Cu-Ni negative alloy calibrated from 0 °C to +200 °C for hot glass-tank and steel-furnace heads.
How should the screen and drain wire of RCB / SCB be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of RCB / SCB should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
