When is SJTOW sufficient and when must I upgrade to SJTOOW?
When a portable cord is terminated with moulded NEMA plugs/connectors or sealed liquid-tight strain-relief glands so that oils only contact the outside of the cord, SJTOW (oil-resistant outer jacket) is completely sufficient and more economical. If the stripped inner cores are exposed to cutting oil mist inside a wet junction box, specify SJTOOW.
How does SJTOW compare with SVT?
SVT is a light-duty 300 V indoor vacuum/appliance cord (18–16 AWG only, thinner 15-mil insulation and 30-mil non-oil/non-outdoor jacket). SJTOW is a Junior Hard Service cord (18–10 AWG, 30-mil insulation and 60–80 mil oil- and weather-resistant jacket) built for outdoor jobsite and workshop abuse.
Can SJTOW be used outdoors year-round?
Yes. The 'W' rating under UL 62 and CSA C22.2 No. 49 qualifies SJTOW for both direct sunlight UV exposure and wet outdoor locations down to -40 °C.
Does a 3-conductor SJTOW cord (e.g. 12/3) carry 3 phase conductors or 2 power + 1 ground?
In North American UL 62 portable cord notation, the green equipment grounding conductor is counted in the total conductor number: '12/3 SJTOW' contains 1 Black (hot), 1 White (neutral) and 1 Green (ground) conductor.
