FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does STOOW differ from SJTOOW?
SJTOOW is a 300 V Junior Hard Service ('J') cord limited to 18–10 AWG. STOOW is a 600 V Extra-Hard-Usage ('S') cord with significantly thicker insulation and jacket walls (for example, 14/3 STOOW is 13.46 mm OD vs 9.65 mm OD for 14/3 SJTOOW) and sizes up to 2 AWG for 480 V and 600 V industrial circuits.
When is STOOW preferred over rubber SOOW in metalworking plants?
Synthetic ester cutting fluids, chlorinated paraffins and certain synthetic hydraulic oils used in CNC machining centres can swell EPDM/SBR rubber cores in SOOW. Specially compounded 105 °C oil-resistant PVC in STOOW offers superior resistance to synthetic machine-tool coolants and acids/alkalis.
What is the difference between STOOW and Bus Drop Cable for overhead machine drops?
Both are 600 V oil-resistant PVC cables used to feed factory machines from overhead distribution. STOOW is a general-purpose UL 62 flexible cord with an insulated green ground conductor; Bus Drop Cable is built specifically to UL 44 / UL 62 / NEC Article 368 with three THHN/PVC-Nylon phase cores and three bare split ground wires tucked into the outer interstices for Kellems mesh bus-drop grips.
Is STOOW rated for outdoor wet locations?
Yes. The 'W' suffix certifies full UL 62 sunlight UV and wet-location compliance from -40 °C to +105 °C.
