FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

What is the difference between SF-2 / SEW-2 and SFF-2 / SEWF-2?
Under UL 66 and CSA C22.2 No. 49, SF-2 and SEW-2 use solid or 7-strand tinned copper conductors (18–10 AWG) rated for 200 °C continuous operation. SFF-2 and SEWF-2 use fine flexible bunched stranding (16 to 65 strands in 18–12 AWG) for movable fixture arms or hinged doors and carry a 150 °C rating under the fixture-wire standard.
How does Type SF-2 differ from Type SF-1?
Type SF-1 is restricted to 18 AWG with a thin 0.015 in (0.38 mm) silicone wall rated at 300 V, whereas Type SF-2 has a 0.030 in (0.76 mm) or 0.045 in (1.14 mm) silicone wall rated for full 600 V service from 18 AWG to 10 AWG.
Why is an outer fiberglass braid used over the extruded silicone rubber?
While vulcanized silicone rubber provides excellent 200 °C dielectric and moisture isolation, it is an elastomer that can be nicked by sharp sheet-metal knockouts or reflector edges inside lighting fixtures and ovens. The saturant-treated E-glass braid adds tough cut-through and abrasion protection.
When should I choose SRML / UL 3231 instead of SF-2 / SFF-2?
Choose Silicone Rubber Motor Lead Wire (SRML / UL 3231) when you need heavy power sizes larger than 10 AWG (up to 4/0 AWG or 500 kcmil), full 200 °C rating with fine rope-lay flexible stranding, or varnish-bake compatibility on motor stators.
