FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why is RG-179 (75 Ω) used instead of RG-178 (50 Ω) or RG-316 (50 Ω) for video and telecom?
Broadcast and industrial video standards (analog CVBS, SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, CoaXPress) and E3/DS3 telecom trunks are standardized at 75 Ω because 75 Ω minimizes coaxial attenuation per unit diameter and reduces capacitive loading (only 64.0 pF/m on RG-179 vs. 96.5 pF/m on 50 Ω RG-178/RG-316).
Why do RG-179 (75 Ω) and RG-316 (50 Ω) have almost the same 2.54 mm outer diameter?
Both cables finish at ~2.50–2.54 mm OD and share a ~1.52–1.60 mm PTFE dielectric diameter, but RG-316 uses a thicker 26 AWG (Ø 0.51 mm) centre conductor to yield 50 Ω, whereas RG-179 uses a thinner 30 AWG (Ø 0.30 mm) centre conductor inside the same dielectric diameter to raise characteristic impedance to 75 Ω.
Which 75 Ω subminiature connectors terminate onto RG-179?
RG-179 is the standard miniature cable for 75 Ω HD-BNC (High-Density BNC), DIN 1.0/2.3, 75 Ω SMB/SMC, 75 Ω MCX/MMCX, and full-size 75 Ω BNC crimp plugs used on high-density routers, frame grabbers, and airborne video recorders. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
When should I specify Double-Shielded RG-179 (RG-179 DS)?
Standard RG-179B/U has one ≥ 95 % silver-plated copper braid (~55 dB shielding). When routing multiple 75 Ω video or CoaXPress camera cables in a tight bundle or alongside power wiring, RG-179 DS adds a second silver-plated copper braid (Ø 2.95 mm) to raise shielding effectiveness above 85 dB.
