FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does RG-178 use a silver-plated copper-clad steel (SCCS) centre conductor instead of pure copper?
At a tiny 30 AWG (Ø 0.30 mm, 7×0.102 mm) diameter, pure annealed copper has very low breaking strength and snaps easily when crimping or routing miniature MMCX/U.FL connectors. Copper-clad steel provides steel core tensile strength while the outer silver plating carries 100 % of the RF skin-effect current.
How does RG-178 (50 Ω) differ from RG-179 (75 Ω)?
Both use the exact same 30 AWG (7×0.102 mm) SCCS centre conductor, silver-plated copper braid, and +200 °C PTFE/FEP fluoropolymer materials. However, RG-178 uses a Ø 0.84 mm PTFE dielectric (Ø 1.80 mm jacket) to achieve 50 Ω ± 2 Ω, whereas RG-179 expands the PTFE dielectric to Ø 1.60 mm (Ø 2.54 mm jacket) to achieve 75 Ω ± 3 Ω.
What is the practical length limit for RG-178 pigtails at 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz?
Because of its miniature 1.80 mm diameter, RG-178 has an insertion loss of 1.51 dB/m at 1 GHz and ~2.4 dB/m at 2.4 GHz. It is engineered specifically for short 50 mm to 500 mm internal board-to-bulkhead pigtails (keep losses under 0.5–1.2 dB), after which an external RG-58 or RG-142 cable takes over.
Can RG-178 be hand-soldered directly to PCB pads or SMA centre contacts without melting the insulation?
Yes. Unlike polyethylene micro-coax whose dielectric melts at +105 °C and shorts the centre pin to the shield during soldering, RG-178 uses virgin extruded PTFE rated beyond +260 °C soldering temperatures. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
