FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does RG-142 handle almost 4× the RF power of RG-58 despite having the same 4.95 mm diameter?
Standard RG-58 uses a polyethylene dielectric that softens above +85 °C, limiting 1 GHz CW power to ~78 W. RG-142 uses a solid extruded PTFE dielectric and FEP jacket rated for +200 °C continuous operation plus low-loss silver-plated conductors, allowing up to 1,100 W CW at 1 GHz.
What is the purpose of the double silver-plated copper braid in RG-142?
A single braided shield (as in RG-58 or RG-303) has optical diamond apertures that allow RF leakage above 1 GHz (~50–60 dB isolation). Applying two direct-contact silver-plated copper braids in opposing weave angles increases shielding effectiveness above 90 dB up to 12.4 GHz. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
Do RG-58 and RG-142 use the exact same crimp connectors?
Both share a Ø 2.95 mm dielectric, so the centre pin and dielectric entry match; however, RG-142 has a slightly larger outer braid diameter over the double shield (Ø 4.34 mm vs. Ø 3.60 mm on RG-58). Always select connectors designated for RG-142 / RG-400 (crimp ferrule .213 in / 5.41 mm).
When should I choose RG-400 instead of RG-142?
RG-142 has a solid Ø 0.94 mm silver-plated copper-clad steel (SCCS) centre conductor for lowest attenuation and high tensile strength in fixed harnesses. If the coaxial assembly undergoes repeated flexing or vibration, choose RG-400 (19×0.20 mm stranded silver-plated copper). Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
