FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between RG-58C/U, RG-58A/U, and plain RG-58/U?
Plain RG-58/U uses a solid bare copper centre conductor (Ø 0.81 mm). RG-58A/U replaces the solid wire with a 19-strand bare copper conductor for flexibility. RG-58C/U (MIL-DTL-17 M17/28-RG058) upgrades to a 19×0.18 mm stranded tinned copper centre conductor, a ≥ 95 % tinned copper braid, and a non-contaminating Type IIA jacket.
Why does MIL-DTL-17 specify a 'Type IIA non-contaminating' PVC jacket on RG-58C/U?
Standard commercial PVC plasticizers slowly migrate into the underlying polyethylene dielectric over time, raising the dielectric loss tangent and causing high-frequency RF attenuation to climb after a few years in service. A Type IIA non-contaminating jacket prevents plasticizer migration so RF insertion loss remains stable.
When should I upgrade from RG-58C/U to RG-142 in a Ø 4.95 mm connector envelope?
Both RG-58C/U and RG-142 have the exact same Ø 2.95 mm dielectric and Ø 4.95 mm outer diameter. Step up to RG-142 whenever ambient temperature exceeds +85 °C (up to +200 °C), frequency exceeds 1 GHz (up to 12.4 GHz), or double silver-plated braids (≥ 90 dB shielding) are needed.
Can RG-58 (50 Ω) be substituted for RG-59 or RG-179 (75 Ω) on video or SDI circuits?
No. Using a 50 Ω RG-58 cable on a 75 Ω video, coax-control, or MADI/BNC interface creates a 1.5:1 VSWR impedance mismatch at every connector, causing ghosting reflections and bit errors. For 75 Ω applications specify RG-179 or RG-59. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
