Application fit

Is EN 50264-3-1 right for your machine?

EN 50264-3-1 replaces thick elastomeric walls (`EN 50264-2-1`) with high-modulus electron-beam cross-linked `EI 109` co-extruded insulation, cutting cable diameter by up to 30 % and weight by up to 25 % in railway switchgear cabinets, traction cubicles and under-frame ducts.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does EN 50264-3-1 achieve a thinner wall than EN 50264-2-1 while keeping a 0.6/1 kV or 1.8/3 kV rating?
EN 50264-3-1 uses high-density electron-beam cross-linked compound Type EI 109 (defined in EN 50264-1), which has higher tensile modulus, cut-through resistance and dielectric strength than conventional vulcanised rubber (EI 101–104). For example, a 1×2.5 mm² 600 V wire has an outer diameter of ~3.3 mm under EN 50264-3-1 versus ~4.1 mm under EN 50264-2-1.
When should I choose EN 50264-3-1 (600 V) vs EN 50306-2 (300 V)?
Choose EN 50306-2 (thin wall, 0.25–0.30 mm insulation, 300 V rating) for high-density low-voltage control and signal wiring from 0.5 to 2.5 mm² inside dry relay racks. Choose EN 50264-3-1 (reduced wall, 0.6/1 kV and 1.8/3 kV, 0.5 to 240 mm²) for 400 V / 750 V / 1500 V auxiliary power, battery buses and general vehicle wiring.
What does the code 'M' or 'MM' mean on EN 50264-3-1 cables?
Single-layer or co-extruded insulated wires are designated 'M' (or 'MG' for green-yellow earth). In the 1800 V (1.8/3 kV) class, an additional outer elastomeric sheath can be applied, designated 'MM'.
Is EN 50264-3-1 resistant to soldering-iron heat and short circuits?
Yes. Because the EI 109 insulation is thermoset via electron-beam irradiation, it will not melt or flow at soldering temperatures or during a +200 °C short circuit.
