FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between RE-Y(st)Y and RE-2Y(st)Y?
In RE-Y(st)Y, the first 'Y' stands for PVC core insulation (mutual capacitance ≤ 200–250 nF/km, insulation resistance ≥ 100 MΩ·km). In RE-2Y(st)Y, '2Y' stands for Polyethylene (PE) core insulation (mutual capacitance ≤ 100–115 nF/km, insulation resistance ≥ 5000 MΩ·km). RE-Y(st)Y is more supple and economical for cabinet and general plant wiring, while RE-2Y(st)Y is preferred for long-distance Ex-i and HART loops.
How does RE-Y(st)Y compare with British BS 5308 Part 2 Type 1?
Both are 300/500 V PVC-insulated, Al/PET-screened, PVC-sheathed instrumentation cables. RE-Y(st)Y follows EN 50288-7 (Class 2 7-wire stranding, Black/White numbered pairs), whereas BS 5308 Part 2 Type 1 uses British Class 5/1/2 stranding and Black/Blue numbered pairs.
Is RE-Y(st)Y suitable for 3-wire Pt100 RTD temperature transmitters?
Yes. Multi-triad RE-Y(st)Y (e.g. 1×3×0.75 mm² or 4×3×1.0 mm² with Black/White/Red numbered cores) is widely used to connect 3-wire Pt100 RTDs to marshalling cabinets.
How should the screen and drain wire of RE-Y(st)Y be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of RE-Y(st)Y should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
