FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How are closed block length (L0) and maximum extended working length (L1) defined on a PUR spiral cable?
Closed block length (L0) is the length of the tightly wound helical coil section at rest, excluding the two straight tangent ends (typically 200 mm each). Extended working length (L1) is the safe maximum distance the spiral can be stretched in regular service — typically 3.5 × L0 for cables up to 7 cores (so a 500 mm block extends cleanly to 1750 mm) and 3.0 × L0 for heavier multi-core or 2.5 mm² sizes.
Why must a spiral cable use a polyurethane (PUR) outer sheath and TPE-E core insulation instead of PVC?
PVC has high mechanical creep (cold flow): after a few hundred stretches, a PVC spiral loses its thermal set and hangs down in loose, sagging loops. High-resilience polyether/polyester PUR combined with high-modulus TPE-E core insulation acts like a composite torsion spring, snapping back crisply to its closed block length L0 over more than 100,000 extension cycles.
Should I specify axial or radial (tangential) straight ends for my equipment?
Specify axial straight ends when the cable exits straight out of a handheld tool handle, pendant grip, or vertical ceiling drop. Specify radial (90° tangential) ends when the cable enters a side-mounted cable gland on a scissor-lift frame or horizontal junction box so the first turn of the coil is not bent sharply against the gland nut.
How can I prevent sagging on long horizontal spiral spans exceeding 2 metres?
For horizontal spans where L1 exceeds 2.0 m, either select a smaller conductor cross-section to reduce self-weight or run a plastic-coated steel support wire or guide rod through the hollow internal bore of the spiral coil.
